1. Who is the Equil Insulin Patch Pump recommended for?

  • It is recommended for people with Diabetes who require insulin, 18 years or older, on a basal bolus insulin regime and for whom their treating doctor has prescribed an insulin pump due to their suitability for the device

1. What differentiates the Equil Insulin Patch Pump from other traditional insulin pumps in the South African market?

  • The Equil Insulin Patch Pump is a small, lightweight and tubeless pump that enables the user to apply it like a patch onto the selected insertion area and control it with a slim device called the Personal Diabetes Assistant (PDA). The PDA also has an integrated glucometer which is convenient as you only need to carry one device
  • The system offers all the features of traditional insulin pumps including variable basal rates, temporary basal option, bolus wizard calculator for accurate dosing, extended bolus options and various alerts/alarms and is small, discreet and simple to use.
  • The Equil Insulin Patch Pump System is a cost-effective insulin pump reimbursed by several medical funders

2. What is the size of the Equil Insulin Patch Pump?

  • The patch pump is 5,9cm x 4,0cm x 1,1cm
  • Imagine wearing a pump slightly smaller and slimmer than a matchbox, or less than half the size of your credit card

4. What batteries should I use for my pump and PDA?

  • Both the pump and PDA have rechargeable batteries
  • The pump is packaged with two rechargeable batteries and a charging device. Use one while you charge one!

5. Does the Equil Insulin Patch Pump have any tubing?

  • No, the Equil Insulin Patch Pump is a tubeless insulin pump
  • As there is no tubing it cannot be caught, tangled, detached or kinked

6. What happens if I go out and forget my PDA, will I still receive insulin through the pump and will I be able to give myself insulin for food?

  • Yes, even if you forget your PDA, the pump will continue to deliver the current basal programme and you will be able to give yourself a quick insulin bolus for your food directly from the patch pump (white button on the side of the patch pump)
  • It is important to initially set the quick bolus increments on your PDA in the Settings Menu in order to have the quick bolus functionality available

7. How would I test my blood glucose using the integrated blood glucose meter on the PDA?

  • The PDA is only compatible with the Exactive EQ blood glucose test strips provided by Homemed. Once you complete a blood glucose test the reading is stored automatically on the PDA

8. How do I access the PDA if I have forgotten my password?

  • You can enter your Equil Insulin Patch Pump serial number into the PDA. The pump serial number can be found on the back of the pump

9. Is the Equil Insulin Patch Pump and PDA waterproof?

  • The patch pump and PDA are not waterproof. The pump should be disconnected during bathing, showering or swimming
  • The pump can be easily disconnected by the push of a button and reconnected

10. Is the Equil Insulin Patch Pump a disposable pump?

  • No, the Equil Insulin Patch Pump is semi-disposable. The pump and rechargeable batteries are consistently used, whereas the consumables (reservoir, cannula and pump base plaster) are changed every three days

11. Do I need to detach my Equil Insulin Patch Pump if I go for a MRI, X-Ray or CT scan?

  • Yes, you will need to detach your patch pump from the pump base plaster if you are going for a MRI, X-Ray or CT scan

1. What is the warranty on the Equil Insulin Patch Pump and PDA?

  • The manufacturer warranty is 4 years for both the patch pump and PDA
2. Do I need to take out insurance on the Equil Insulin Patch Pump System?
  • Yes, it is advised to take out personal insurance on the Equil Insulin Patch Pump System in the event of loss, damage or theft

Consumables: Infusion Set And Reservoir

1. How often do I need to change my consumables (reservoir and infusion set) on the pump?

  • It is recommended to change consumables every three days. One month supply includes 10 reservoirs and 10 infusion sets per box
2. How do I receive my monthly consumable delivery?
  • Homemed will deliver your monthly consumables to your selected delivery address
3. How many units does the reservoir hold?
  • The reservoir holds 200U of U-100 rapid acting insulin
4. What is the size of the cannula for the Equil Insulin Patch Pump?
  • The soft cannula is 6mm in length

Using The PDA To Test My Blood Glucose Levels

1. Which blood glucose test strips can I use for the integrated blood glucose meter on my PDA?

  • Only Exactive EQ blood glucose test strips may be used with the PDA
  • The Exactive EQ blood glucose test strips are available from Homemed and may be ordered with your monthly consumables

2. How long does it take for the blood glucose result to be displayed on the PDA screen after performing a blood glucose test? 

  • The test result is displayed within 5 seconds
  • Always ensure that you apply enough blood to the edge of the test strip until the test window is completely filled

3. Can I apply more blood to the test strip if the test window is not filled with the first blood application?

  • Yes, you may add additional blood within 3 seconds

Download Software

1. What software can I use to download data from my Equil Insulin Patch Pump?

  • You can download the Diasend software at https://www.diasend.com/ and create your own profile (Username and Password). Your Equil Insulin Patch Pump can be downloaded by connecting your PDA to your PC via the micro USB cable provided. The data can be downloaded as a pdf document and shared with your Healthcare Professional. Your Healthcare Professional can also download your pump on the Diasend platform at their practice
